biography
Team Love Records is proud to present several classic Simon Joyner records in digital format for the first time ever. Until now, locating Joyner’s back catalog has been a challenge for music lovers (many records are either out of print or available only on limited vinyl pressings). But now, Blue Melody, Heaven’s Gate, Room Temperature, Hotel Loves, Songs for the New Year, Yesterday Tomorrow and In Between, and the Lousy Dance are all available for download through the itunes music store.
Omaha, Nebraska native and singer/songwriter Simon Joyner has been writing about the dizzy and dark aspects of the human condition since 1992, when the One Hour label released his Umbilical Chords cassette followed in giant steps by his Room Temperature CD in 1993 (later reissued on double vinyl by Jagjaguwar). The vinyl-only The Cowardly Traveler Pays His Toll followed in 1994 on Sing, Eunuchs! John Peel famously played it in its entirety on his program and Joyner’s underground cult status was solidified. Heaven’s Gate, Songs for the New Year, Yesterday Tomorrow and In Between all followed on Sing, Eunuchs! during the heyday of independent labels and lo-fi music, a non-genre Joyner never felt comfortable being placed in. Joyner employed a larger band with notable Chicago jazz and avant-garde players on his next record, The Lousy Dance on Truckstop. The Christine EP on Secretly Canadian and several singles followed through 1999. In 2001, along with his band the Fallen Men, Joyner released To Almost No One, a 7" boxset tribute to ten singer/songwriters including: Paul Siebel, Anne Briggs, Kris Kristofferson, David Blue, Townes Van Zandt, Gene Clark, Jerry Jeff Walker, Jim McCarthy, Phil Ochs and Jackson C. Frank. The bleak but critically lauded Hotel Lives arrived that same year on Truckstop, followed by the equally introspective Lost with the Lights On in 2004 on Jagjaguwar. A compilation of singles and rarities, Beautiful Losers, was released in early 2006 and Joyner closed the year with Skeleton Blues, featuring his Omaha band the Fallen Men.
Simon Joyner tours the U.S. and Europe only sporadically.
